Most of the Netherlands’ highest buildings can be found in Rotterdam and no other Dutch city has so many 4 lane streets right through the center. Foreigners report Rotterdam is the city in the Netherlands they can best relate to. But… unlike most of their home towns, Rotterdam has a complete network of high quality bicycle infrastructure.
More on Rotterdam in an upcoming blog-post. But first, this teaser:
David,
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, but those levels of cycling will never be reached in Australia because our population is too spread out & our streets are too narrow (except for the ones that are too wide - but those are too hilly). It is also too hot here & our fuel prices are too low to justify proper infrastructure. Anyway, everyone knows that vehicular cycling is the only way to encourage people to take up cycling.
And don't get me started on the amount of people in that video not wearing helmets, why it is shameful & bordering on child abuse for parents to be out in the fresh air spending time with their kids without safety gear. It would be much better for their health to be shuttled around in an SUV & then go home & play a nice cycling game on their X-Box.
Yes, it is obvious to the rest of the world that the Dutch have no clue as to how to build a health society let alone a cycling culture.
Love it! Great work, Mark.
ReplyDeleteMark, I am just so glad you spend your spare time sharing Dutch cycling stuff with us online. I am grateful for your work!
ReplyDeleteI thought someone previously said that Rotterdam had fairly poor cycle numbers/infrastructure in NL terms?
ReplyDeleteNeil: That's right. Rotterdam does have relatively little cycling for a Dutch city.
ReplyDeleteThe infrastructure lagged somewhat too, but as ever work has been going on to improve things.
I won't say too much as Mark has another excellent post coming up on Rotterdam in a few days...
